| THE QUESTION: How do you explain that so many diverse cultures that are separated by such vast geological barriers all appear to share some similar belief in a higher power or god-like figure? |
| THE ANSWER: The answer to this question is perhaps one of the most simple for anyone to explain. Even in my own day amongst the more educated there was knowledge of other cultures and their varying belief systems. There was indeed this common thread of intuitive human awareness that the sun, that mightiest of all stars, possessed a higher power that ultimately was responsible for the very existence and physical well-being of any human community. The sun itself was often worshiped above all other divine images and even where there was more than just one image of worship, it was usually the sun or some representation of its mysterious power that maintained a supreme rule over all the other lesser gods or divine images. Of course, none of these ancient and even some modern cultures had or have any awareness of the scientific reality of their physical world or the universe. Even when I was living on this earth I had no previous awareness or understanding that the world was not, in fact, flat. As a man of my own time, even I had believed that the sun was indeed rotating around the earth that was commonly perceived to have been flat; both images are still visibly apparent to the uninitiated. By some not so strange coincidence these ancient cultures that worshiped the sun had an intuitive knowledge of reality that was not confirmed scientifically until the 17th century. Darwin certainly shattered many religious explanations for the existence of man with his postulation of evolution, but it wasn't until the 20th century that man had a most profound and complete understanding that the sun was truly the source of all life on this Earth. And even with this discovery and understanding that life had somehow been created from within some primal soup that was most certainly energized and stimulated by the warming rays of the sun, it was still being taught that life somehow " crawled" out of these ancient seas up onto land. The other heavenly body that had received its rightfully due attention was the moon. Man now understands that the effect of the moon on the rising and ebb of our tides required that some stranded life forms had to adapt to an existence on the land where it was air and not water that was the source of life-supporting oxygen. There never was nor is there any supreme divine power or super consciousness that is directly or consciously responsible for our existence as we know it today nor even some 2000 years ago when I was walking on this earth. I sort of lived in that blissful ignorance of so much reality, but at the same time my only passionate focus was on the emotional salvation of the people I loved. I just wanted everybody to experience their rightful share of joy in their too often dismal lives. There is what I might call a divine reality that possesses godlike qualities and this divine reality is accessible to any human being of any faith or religion who freely chooses and sincerely attempts to not only love himself but also his infinitely diverse neighbors. This was my only commandment and upon this one commandment rested the entirety of the law as I conceived it. From its very inception the Catholic Church never truly heeded to nor ever paid due respect to this one commandment; it was sort of put on the back burner; making room for the more political need and demand for obedience. And that of even a greater tragedy was the similar failure of the diverse Protestant churches that had been founded after the 16th century. There is no true god except for the miraculous power of unconditional love. |
